The Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic Diet (Keto or Keto Diet) is a low-carb diet based on eating very little amounts of carbohydrates, a moderate amount of protein and more liberal amounts of healthy fat.

Typically, net carbs should be less than 20g a day. Net carbs are calculated by taking total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohols.

Keto’s main purpose is to maintain our bodies in a natural state of ketosis, which allows us to have our metabolism on a fat-burning mode, as opposed to typical sugar-burning. By burning fat for energy, we can achieve optimal levels of energy and control our sugar cravings.

When our bodies are in ketosis, it is easier to access our fat stores and burn them off. Also, because there is a perception of “unlimited” amounts of fat available for energy, we tend to feel less hungry and tired, as the supply of energy is more constant.

Foods eaten in a Keto Diet also tend to cause a low-insulin response (in other words, they do not raise sugar levels as much as sugar does). Excessive insulin is believed to be the cause of weight-gain in the long-term, as insulin sends the message to our bodies to store fat. The Paleo Diet

Many individuals lose weight on the Paleo diet because they eliminate most of the foods that were causing the weight gain prior to Paleo, such as refined sugar and processed foods. Paleo and Keto are not mutually exclusive. One can be Paleo and Keto if she sticks with low-carb foods that are found in nature.
